Do Not Buy, NetGear Offers Zero Support - Title: Worked great for 9 months, then failed. Netgear support can't give a straight answer. I've had the Orbi 870 (router plus three satellites) on Verizon Fios 2 Gig for about nine months, and until recently it worked perfectly. After a power outage where the power cycled on and off several times, the system started dropping the internet every 1–2 hours for 10–20 minutes at a time, like clockwork. Every device in the house loses its connection, while the router itself stays up and reachable. Here's what I've done to fix it, much of it at Netgear's direction: - Factory reset and rebuilt the entire system from scratch four times, including once from an older firmware image - Manually updated the firmware on the router and every satellite - Installed a beta firmware Netgear's engineering team sent me and said would fix the problem. It didn't. - Swapped power supplies between the router and a satellite at Netgear's request. Still dropping. - Changed DNS settings - Power-cycled the ONT and router more times than I can count - Had Verizon out twice. They found no signal problems on their side and replaced their ONT anyway. The drops continued. - Ran network tests during an outage showing the router itself reports it can't reach the internet while staying connected to everything in the house Every variable outside the router has been ruled out. The obvious conclusion is that the hardware failed, likely from the power event, and that's exactly what a warranty is for. The support experience is the real problem. Every call starts with a first-level agent. I ask for level 2 and give my case number, and level 2 tells me a separate engineering team is evaluating it. They have no direct contact with that team, only an internal ticketing system. When I ask what engineering is waiting on, what the criteria are for approving a replacement, or when I'll get a decision, nobody can tell me. After more than two weeks and hours on the phone, I have no timeline and no answer, and my family's internet still cuts out every couple of hours. For a premium mesh system at this price, that's not acceptable. When the Orbi works, it's excellent. When it fails, you're on your own. To Netgear: please don't reply here pointing me to your community forums or asking me to start over with support. I have an open case, I've completed every troubleshooting step your team asked for and more, and you already have everything you need. What I need is a warranty decision on my existing case. To other buyers: think about whether you want to depend on Netgear's support if something goes wrong. If you do buy, a protection plan through Best Buy may be worth it.

Customer reviews
Write a reviewGreat product - Excellent customer service and easy installation . My wifi really fast in every areas
Lives up to the hype. - This mesh setup is easily covering 10000 plus sq ft of wifi 7 strength signal and was easy to setup.
Excellent - Great range and ease of setup. Speed is fantastic.
It's been a game changer for my house! - We have a two-story house with a basement. 2GB fiber network to the house. I had a TP-LINK BE63 (router and one satellite). It worked for the most part, except for the far TV in the main bedroom, which was on the same floor, but opposite ends of the house. The TV wouldn't connect sometimes, lagged, or took forever to load. I upgraded to the Orbi 870 and it is has solved my whole house wifi situation. Granted I could of added a 2nd satellite to the TP-LINK system, but I also had some concerns with TP-LINK and recent issues with the FCC and and TP-Link equipment. The Orbi 870 was a breeze to setup through the app and I was up and running in about 30 minutes, including firmware updates. Speeds to all of my devices have improved dramatically and connections have stayed strong and connected. If there were a negative, I'm very disappointed NETGEAR wants me to pay for NETGEAR Armor once the 30 day trial is over. I'm still trying to decide if this worth the purchase price and I'm leaning to not purchase this for future use. I have been very pleased with this purchase and have not had any issues so far after a solid month of use. I hope this continues!
Strong coverage, weak IOS networking capability - Netgear works exceptionally well for most all devices, and it is a powerful access point. Unfortunately, Apple connectivity is inconsistent and drops connections in the middle of a session. This is known issue with Orbi and they have yet to solve the issue to my satisfaction --- after submitting multiple tickets to their support teams. If you want ease of use without all the networking bells and whistles, go with Eero.
Good tech, but a few problems. - Upgraded from an Orbi RB40 sysyem. Initial installation and set up went well. Excellent wired speed and wireless speed/coverage. Began seeing "lag spikes" while gaming and streaming. Not really noticable during routine browsing. Netgear tech support was pretty good. Was able to reach someone (offshore) fairly quickly. They ran through data gathering scripts. We frequently got disconnected, but they were prompt to reach back out, and their notes were thorough, minimizing "do over". Final analysis ... the router in the Orbi seems to be overly sensisitve to line noise from my Verizon FIOS 2 Gb/s service, and was giving false DoS Attack warnings. Routers protective response was interupting service. Simply disabling UPnP on the router fixed it. I (and Google) came up with that solution about 3 phone-houes before Netgear did. Router should not be that sensitive. Tech support should have been more efficient. As long as I don't need UPnP, I like this system. Orbi app is good, providing good visibility and control of the whole network.
Very happy! - Really good investment replacing our older model. Serving us well.
Persistent, Intermittent Connectivity Failures - Don’t gloss over the bad reviews!!! I had an earlier version of the Orbi product. It worked flawlessly for five years. Then the router burned out. Okay, that happens. So I purchased this expensive edition. I read about connectivity problems but figured, “that happens to all products.” I should have heeded their warning. Do a deep dive with “Claude” or “Chat GPT” about firmware issues with Netgear routers and you will get to the truth. The problem is endemic and persistent. I spent three months working with Netgear engineers trying to resolve an issue that was ultimately unresolvable. The problem is with the firmware. That said, the Netgear customer support is top tier. They called when they said they would. They appeared in every respect to be interested in the problems I was experiencing. I have zero complaints about the support staff. But it’s like getting first class, five star service on the Titanic—ultimately futile. I finally told Netgear that I wanted a new unit. They complied and sent me a brand new unit under the proviso I would send back the defective one in the box in which the new unit arrived, That replacement unit is sitting on a shelf in my closet. I do not plan to install it. It is $1,000 brick (as another reviewer mentioned) That’s because in the day or so it took Netgear to send me a new unit (and I can’t say enough about Netgear customer service) I purchased an eero Pro 700 mesh system which I installed, It has been performing flawlessly and I refuse to suffer the calamity of the replacement Netgear Orbi unit because I now know it is a persistent, unresolved firmware issue. That was an expensive lesson. Netgear lost a customer they had for decades. Not because of bad service, but rather because of a bad product the clearly released before it was ready. I am not a technological novice. I get this stuff. I also know that routers are something you should never have to think about, let alone be haunted by for months. Do yourself a favor and buy something else. Best of luck!
Great Mesh Router - Bought a 770 first but swapped it for a 870 when it was $300 off. The unit I got had a bad satellite unit and did not install right. Best Buy replaced the system with a new one which works fine. Setup with the good unit was a snap, took only about 20 mins. Highly recommend it and if you get it for $300 less, it’s a no brainer. Very fast downloads with this unit.
Great improvement on 850 - I have had orbi systems for as long as I can remember and most recently had the 850 with 2 satellites. Home is 7,000 square feet but I did have some dead zones in the house like a couple bathrooms at the corners and the garage. But other than that 850 was a great product that I didn’t have any complaints with. It got taken out by lighting and thought it was time to upgrade to a WiFi 7 system. Have new iPhones and MacBook Airs in the family and got the 870 on sale for $999 so thought why not. Set up on the 870 was so much easier than I remember the 850 being. And I have no dead spots now. All the bathrooms have WiFi and the garage. The pool area and even the boat dock has WiFi service now. And blazing fast speeds on iPhone 17 pro max and MacBook Air compared to what I was getting on the 850. I only have gig service on cable but was getting 1.2 consistently.
Orbi 870 - Great Product. Easy to set up! Highly recommend!
Routers - Excellent, very good coverage and distance. Very easy to set
Terrible - This thing has some pretty serious connectivity issues that are well known online. From day one I have struggled with drops and blocked devices. I work from home and need reliable internet service. I also bought subscriptions to armor and parental controls, which are clunky and limited. Ive been brand loyal to netgear for over 20 years, but its time to move on. I regret not returning it within the return period. Now im stuck with an expensive paper weight.
Fantastic coverage and easy setup - I've been running this Orbi system for a couple of months now, and the coverage is absolutely excellent. It pushes a strong, consistent Wi-Fi 7 signal throughout the house, easily handling all my connected devices without any dead zones or dropped connections. The installation was another major plus. It was completely hassle-free and straightforward to get the whole mesh network up and running right out of the box. The only real drawback here is the cost—it is definitely on the pricey side. However, if you are willing to invest in reliable, top-tier performance and a painless setup, this system absolutely delivers.
Orbi 871 - Excellent performance. System speed better than expected.
Happy with my Orbi purchase - Easy setup, great range, and supports the speed my fiber provides. Priced a little high but worth the spend. Definitely recommend.
Awesome routers - The routers are really fast and reliable. If you are looking for a fast router this is the one.
BEST ROUTER EVER - This system works EXCELLENT!!!! Yes it is pricey but I have 3 levels in my house and this works better than any router I have ever had before. I have the 3 separate pieces. Glad I got it!!
Great product once setup. Initial setup steps could be more clear regarding what to expect, but I was able to complete the configuration and it is up and running well.
